Schalke dumped out of cup Late Bance strike sends Schalke out of the German Cup

Schalke 04's dismal season continued after Tuesday's 1-0 defeat to second divison Mainz in the quarter-finals of the German Cup.

Aristide Bance's 88th-minute goal was enough to end four-time cup winners Schalke's interest in the competition.

The Burkina Faso forward's strike sends Mainz - who are second in Germany's second tier- into the semi-finals for the first time in their history.

Schalke's exit piles the pressure onto Dutch coach Fred Rutten, whose side lie eighth in the league, nine points adrift of leaders Hertha Berlin.

Defending champions Bayern Munich go head-to-head with Bayer Leverkusen in on Wednesday's stand-out game, as one of three quarter-final matches.
